Aerial bucket trucks come in a variety of configurations, including telescoping booms, articulating booms, or a combination of both. Before you are permitted to operate an aerial bucket truck, you will need to be adequately trained and have the knowledge to operate safely and productively.
The aerial bucket truck is a unique piece of equipment. Typically, aerial bucket trucks are used to perform tasks at heights that may not practically or safely be performed by other methods. There are many variations ranging in size, boom types, physical capacity, and equipment options.
This program contains the following six lessons:
Lesson 1 - Introduction to the Bucket Truck: Topics covered in this lesson include equipment variations, fall arrest and travel restraint, the operator’s manual, operator safety and responsibility, potential hazards, work site conditions, communication, securing the work area, labels and decals, and safety symbols.
Lesson 2 - Pre-use: This lesson discusses the importance of performing a daily pre-use inspection and covers each part of the bucket truck’s inspection in depth. This lesson helps trainees understand how to identify areas with broken, missing, or damaged parts before and after use, as well as how to safely perform an inspection.
Lesson 3 - Start Up and Shut Down: This lesson outlines pre-start procedures and safety, start-up techniques for different engine types, and shut-down procedures (normal and emergency).
Lesson 4 – Controls: This lesson introduces trainees to the bucket truck’s controls, engine switches, outrigger controls, boom controls, bucket controls, safety controls, work tool controls, and emergency stop buttons.
Lesson 5 - Function Testing: Before operating the bucket truck, the operator must perform function testing. This lesson focuses on the testing of brakes (parking brake and service), PTO, engine speed, outrigger / stabilizer, turntable controls, and bucket controls.
Lesson 6 - Machine Operation: Topics in this lesson include getting started, bucket specifics, equipment set-up, electrical hazards, leveling, weather, boom speed, bucket safety, auxiliary work ports, communication, and moving equipment.
